In addition to regular cardiac theatre & cardiology cath lab sessions, there are several other educational opportunities available. These include spending one session per fortnight gaining TTE skills in the cardiology department and intraoperative TOE, with skilled and accredited cardiac anaesthesia staffl. There are additional opportunities to develop skills in point of care ultrasound (POCUS). This knowledge is further consolidated at the weekly echo meeting in the department where we review and discuss recent interesting cases.
During your fellowship with us we anticipate that you will perform well over 100 TOE’s, with additional experience in TTE. We expect fellows to complete a certification exam such as the NBE PTExam, EACVI Adult TOE exam, the University of Melbourne Master of Clinical US, or equivalent. Fellows will receive broad exposure to POCUS, with a clear focus on TOE and TTE.
Fellows are expected to manage straightforward cardiac surgical cases independently from the halfway point and more complex cases with local supervision.
There are additional opportunities to get involved in research, teaching, and quality assurance projects with regular clinical support time allocated for this.
For specific queries about the Cardiac Fellowship, please contact the fellowship co-ordinators Drs Abarna Devapalasundaram, Claire Garratt or Sam Costello.
